Coloring pages for toddlers

A crayon tip is about 8 mm across. That single number decides most of what belongs on this page. If a shape on the paper is narrower than that, a two-year-old cannot fill it in, and the sheet turns into a thing that gets abandoned halfway.

So every area on every sheet gets measured before it is published, in millimetres at the size it prints. A sheet reaches this page when nine tenths of the space to color is in areas wider than that crayon tip.

Nine tenths rather than all of it, because "all" is not achievable and claiming it would be a lie. Wherever two outlines meet at an angle — a whisker against a cheek, a tail across a flank — they leave a wedge a millimetre or two wide. Every drawing has them, including ones drawn by hand, and nobody colours them in. What matters is the areas your child is actually aiming at, and those are the ones this measures.

31 sheets at this grade so far. More arrive as they clear review — the full library has the rest.

Making the print last longer

Print two copies. The first one gets destroyed in about four minutes and the second is the one that ends up on the fridge. This costs nothing here because there is no download limit.

If you have a laminator, a laminated sheet plus dry-wipe markers turns one print into something reusable, which is worth doing for the sheets your child keeps coming back to.

Questions

What makes a coloring page suitable for a two-year-old?

Two things: nine tenths of the space to color has to be in shapes wider than a crayon tip, and there have to be few enough shapes that finishing one is realistic in a short sitting. Detail is not the enemy; small detail is.

My toddler colors over the lines. Does that matter?

No. At this age the point is the grip and the arm movement, not staying inside anything. Bold outlines help because they are still visible under a scribble.

Should I print on thicker paper?

It helps. Toddlers press hard, and standard 80gsm copier paper tears under a wax crayon worked back and forth. Anything from 120gsm up survives better.
